HIGHWAY ENGINEER

1-3 Years experience following Engineer Intern (E.I.) certification in FL
Choice Engineering is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Engineering Intern I
to join our Highway Design/Roadway team. This is an exciting opportunity for a
junior-level civil engineer looking to gain hands-on experience in transportation
infrastructure projects. The role provides exposure to a wide range of engineering
tasks, including design, fieldwork, technical documentation, and interdepartmental
collaboration. The ideal candidate will work under the guidance of senior engineers
and support both the highway design and traffic teams.
Key Responsibilities
· Field Data Collection
Conduct field surveys to gather topographic data, traffic counts, and site conditions.
Assist in documenting field observations and ensuring data accuracy.
· Design & Drafting Support
Assist in the preparation of roadway construction plans, profiles,
cross-sections, and other engineering drawings using
MicroStation and OpenRoads.
· Traffic Analysis
Support the traffic group with studies related to traffic volume, speed,
and safety. Contribute to signal warrant analysis, crash data evaluations,
and operational assessments.
· Project Coordination
Work closely with other engineering disciplines, stakeholders, and permitting
agencies to ensure project alignment and timely deliverables.
· Compliance & Standards
Assist in applying local, county, and FDOT standards, including AASHTO,
MUTCD, and other regulatory criteria in the preparation of highway designs.
· Estimating & Documentation
Contribute to cost estimating, quantity take-offs, and technical report writing.
· Quality Assurance
Participate in internal peer reviews, cross-checks, and adherence
to quality control procedures for all deliverables.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering
with emphasis in Transportation (required)
• Professional Engineer (PE)
Ability to obtain Professional Engineer (P.E.) licensure in the State of Florida.
• 1-3 Yrs of experience
1–3 years of experience supporting highway/roadway design projects.
Preferred Qualifications & Skills:
· Engineer Intern (EI)
Engineer Intern (E.I.) Certification in Florida.
· Professional Engineer (PE)
P.E. license in Florida (preferred but not required).
· Proficiency in:
MicroStation, OpenRoads, AutoTURN, and GuideSIGN.
· Working knowledge of:
FDOT District Standards, AASHTO, MUTCD, and related manuals.
· Familiarity with:
Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Project, or Primavera for scheduling and
documentation.
· Communication Skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
· Attitude:
Strong initiative, collaboration, and desire to work in a
multidisciplinary team environment.
